Rethinking Virtual
We had many great successes in converting to summer camp online, however, we also made some mistakes in the mindset required to redesign a fully fledged physical summer camp and make it into a fully virtual immersive experience. We took all of the components of physical camp and made digital equivalents. This move worked fairly well for many items but where we had the least success is where we started with a real world activity and tried to convert it to the virtual environment.

TRICΔMP Clusters
- The Cluster Team: responsible for building groups of merit badges into cohesive themes and designing a project based curriculum around it.
Central to our TRICΔMP program would be the merit badge classes themselves and we spent a large amount of time and resources on designing the best possible program. Several components went into our decision making process and I’ll describe some of the biggest decisions and factors below.

Distance Learning with the Emerald Bay Outdoor Academy
The Emerald Bay Outdoor Academy was preparing for it’s first full season in March 2020. Groups had been booked, staff had been hired and camp was preparing to open for the season when COVID-19 began to shut down schools and cities as their first week began. So they began an experiment in what distance learning might look like for the camp, livestreaming content straight to Facebook hoping to have live interactions with students at home by chat.
